T H E name of this family is undoubtedly local, and taken froni the barony of Cochrane, in the fhire of Rcnfrcw. It is of great antiquity; and though none of them arrivcd to Ihc dignity of peerage till the reign of Charles 1. yet they wcre barons of fome diftinEtion for many centuries before, and had large poflefhhons in thole parts.

- Their immediate anceftor was Waldevus de Cochrane,. Who in the reign of’ Alexander III, was witness to the grant made by DungaI, thc fon of Sweyn, to Walter Stcwarr, earl of Menteith, of the lands of Skipnifh, in the fhire of Argyll; and his fucceffor, William de Cochrane, pcrformed homage to king Edward I. in England, in 1296.

ceeded his fon William, father of Robert, whofe fon Robert. was father of another William, and he of another Robert, who was father of Allan, and he of John, whofe fon, John, marrying a daughter of the family of Lindfay of~Dunrod, had iffue a fon,

William, of that ilk, who erected from the foundation the ancient feat of Cochrane, and adorned it with large plantations. He married Margaret, daughter of’ Robert Montgomery of Skelmorly, in the fhire of Air; by Mary his wife, daughter of Robert lord Semple, and had three · daughters; whereof

Elizabeth, marrying her coufin Alexander, a. younger fon of John Blair, of that ilk, the faid Alexander, by the entail, changed his name to Cochrane, and had iffue feven fons and two daughters, viz. John, the eldefl, who died without iffue; Sir William, of Cowdcn; Alexander, colonel in the army of Char1es I. whofe fon was laird of Manfhiell; Hugh, anceftor of the Cochranes of Ferguflee, alfo a colonel in the army of Charles I. Sir Bryce, likewife a colonel in that army, who loft his life in the fervice, in i650; Arthur, a captain in the army; and Gavin, anceftor 0f the Cochranes of Craigmuir. Elizabeth, the eldeft daughter, was wife of John Lennox of Woodhead, Efq; and Grizel, of Thomas Dunlop of Houfehill. Sir William, the fecond fon, fucceeded, on the death of his brother, who was created a baron, and earl of Dundonald. He married Eupheme, daughter of Sir William Scot of Ardros near Ely in Fifefhire, and had iffue two fons, William, lord Cochrane; and Sir John, of Ochiltree, anceflor of the prefent earl, of whom hereafer: And a daughtcr, lady Grizel, married George lord Rofs. William lord Cochrane dying before his father, left by his wife, lady Catharine Kennedy, daughter of John earl of Caffilis, John, who fucceeded his grandfather; William Cochrane of Kilinarnock, married to lady Grizel, daughter of James Graham, the fecond marquis of Montrofe; Thomas, of Pollfkelly, and Alexander, of Bonfhaw, both which families are extinct; and three daughters, Margaret, married to Alexander Montgomery, carl of Eglington; Helen, to Hugh earl of Sutherland; and Jane, firft, to John vifeount Dundee; and fecondly, to William Livingflon, vifcount Kilfyth. . He was fucceeded by his eldeft fon,

John, fecond carl, who married lady Sufan, daughter of William and Anne, duke and duchefs of Hamilton, and by hcr, (who married, fecondly, Charles, marquis of Tweeddale) had Two fons, William and John ; and dying in 1691, was fucceded by his eldeft fon,

William, third earl; but he dying unznarricd, in 1705, the honour devolved Upon his brother,

John, fourth earl, who in 1713 was elected one of the sixteen peers for North Britain. In the firft of king George I

he was made colonel of the fourth troop of horfe guards. He married firft, lady Ann, daughtcr of Charles, earl of Duncon, by whom he had iffue William, the fifth earl, and three daughters; lady Ann, rnarried to James duke of Hamilton; lady Sufan, to Charles Lyon, earl of Strathmore; and lady Catharine, to Alexander Stewart, earl of Galloway. He married in 17 15, to his fecund wife, the lady Mary Ofborn, fecond daughter of Peregrine duke of Leeds, and widow of Henry duke of Beaufort, but by her had no iffue; and dying iii 1720, was fucceeded by

William, his only fon, fifth earl, who dying in 1724, in the feventeenth year of his age, the honour defcended to

Thomas Cochrane of Kilmarnock, fixth earl, fon of William, fecond fon of William lord Cochrane, before-mentioned, by the lady Grizel Graham, daughter of James, marquis of Montrofe, by whom he alfo had five daughters, Catharine, the wife of David Smith of Methven, Efq; Ifabella, of John Ogiily of Balbegno; Anne; Chriftian; and Grizel, the wife of John Cochrane of Ferguflee.

Which Thomas, his fon, fixth earl, married Catharine, daughter of lord Bafil Hamilton, fixth fon of William and Anne, duke and duchefs of Hamilton; and dying in 1737 left two daughters, lady Mary, and lady Catharine, wife of captain Wood; and one fon.

William, lord Cochrane, feventh earl of Dundonald, who.having been killed at the taking of Cape Breton, in July 1758 was fucceeded by Thomas Cochrane, fon o f William, fon of Sir John Cochrane of Ochiltree, fecond fon of William, firft earl of Dundonald.

\Vhich Thomas, the prefent and eighth earl of Dundonald, in his younger ycars was a major in the army, and reprefented in parliament the fhire of Renfrew, in 1722, and in 1730, was appointed one of the commiffioners of excife in Scotland, which office he enjoyed for feveral )‘ears. He married firft, Elizabeth, daughter of James Ker of Morrifton, Efq; by whom he had iffue a fon, William, who died young; and a daughter, lady Grizel. His fecond wife was Jane, daughter .of Archibald Stewart of Torrence, Efq; by whom he has iffue fix fons and one daughter, viz. Archibald, lord Cochrane ;. Charles, John, James, Bafil, Alexander, and lady Betty.
