February 1985

Be it known unto all by these presents I, Ian Douglas Leonard Cochrane, 14th EARL OF DUNDONLALD of the name and arms of Cochrane, considering that it is my wish that a tartan be worn and used as the tartan of the Clan of Cochrane and that for this purpose a tartan should be defined and recorded to the effect that the same shall not be subject to unwarrantable and inconvenient variations, and considering that there was an error in the Probative Deed recorded in the Lyon Court Books (Writs Section) of date 20 August 1974; WIT YE ME that in the exercise of the power competent to and vested in me as Chief of the Name and Arms of Cochrane I have ordered and appointed likeas I now order and appoint that the proper tartan of the said Name of Cochrane is and shall be of the colours and proportions herinafter specified,

For more information about tartans the Scottish Tartans Authority was formed in 1996 by Scotland's leading weavers and tartan retailers and enjoys a unique mix of governors from both the private and commercial sectors. We were immediately joined by our kindred spirit in the USA - the International Association of Tartan Studies (IATA) and the Tartan Educational and Cultural Association (TECA) and a representative from those bodies serves on our Board of Governors.
